All in-person clinical sessions are taught by Karyn Clark
THE BENEFITS OF A 1:1 CLINICAL SESSION.
1:1 Clinical Somatics sessions are the most effective way to regain muscle function and to improve your freedom of movement. Clinical Somatics sessions focus on addressing your particular patterns of habituated muscle tension and helping you to learn how to improve the pain and discomfort they may be causing you.
Although Clinical Somatics sessions involve assisted hands-on pandicutation it is referred to as ‘Education’ not treatment as it is a guided learning session. To achieve the full benefit that Essential Somatic movement can provide, these sessions require that the client continue their movement practice at home and/or in group classes and workshops. The continued practice is the best way in which to maintain the changes and improvement you make in your muscle function, body awareness, and movement once you have learned to reverse your habituated movement patterns also referred to as Sensory Motor Amnesia (SMA).
WHAT TO EXPECT DURING A 1:1 CLINICAL SESSION?
At the start of each session, once we have completed a health related questionnaire together, a basic assessment is carried out to see what your nervous system is showing us about your habituated movement patterns and SMA. This assessment allows us to determine which clinical session would be the most suitable to work with and teach you during that session. Each clinical lesson focuses on one specific stress reflex pattern that may show as being more dominant in the way you stand, move, and walk. Integrated Clinical Somatics is an educational process therefore we advise booking a series of sessions so you can gradually learn the skills that will help you to create freedom of movement and reduce any chronic pain or tension.
Once we have completed the basic assessment we will explain to you which lesson we are going to focus on and why that is. During the session you will be invited to lie on a low table and will be guided, hands-on, through gentle, easy movements and assisted pandiculations which help to restore sensation and control of muscles at the brain level and address your specific patterns of chronic muscular tension.
With hands-on help, support and feedback from your practitioner, you will begin to retrain your brain to release habituated, painful muscles and improve tension and function. This process improves the brain’s awareness, and improves your ability to monitor, correct, and adjust your posture, movement, and responses to stress yourself. Each session focuses on your particular needs, history of muscular pain, and movement habits.
At the end of each session you will be taught specific Integrated Somatic Movements to practice at home. A daily 5-10 minute Somatics routine is the key to reinforcing the improvement you achieve during each private session. These self-care movements are the key to long-term pain relief, improved function and more efficient movement. A daily Integrated Clinical Somatics practice gives you the tools to manage chronic stress, relieve aches and pains, improve balance, and monitor and improve your movement and posture.
